Downtown Vallarta has two main areas, divided by the Cuale River. The northern section (at left on the map) is commonly referred to as Viejo Vallarta or Centro. The famous Malecon is here as well as the Church of the Virgin of Guadalupe crowned with its distinctive bell tower.

The southern section of town (at the right) is known today as Olas Altas or Zona Romantica. This area typifies traditional Puerto Vallarta, full of cozy bars and international restaurants. Here also is Playa los Muertos, popular with local residents and visitors alike, and the pier offering boat transportation to the southern beach villages.

IN THE CITY'S CENTER
at the mouth of the Cuale river, is Molino de Agua. Thirty years ago it was called the Jungle Inn and was more like a forest than a hotel, displaying tall palms as well as rubber and mango trees. Molino de Agua has retained the charm of the city's past while adding the comforts of modern life.
